The Quran is roughly equal in length to the New Testament. It is organized into 114 chapters, known as Surahs , which vary significantly in length. To safeguard the text for future generations, the first caliph, Abu Bakr, ordered Zayd ibn Thabit to compile the first complete written copy. Later, as Islam spread, the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, standardized the script and distributed copies to major Islamic centers, burning other versions to ensure textual uniformity.
