Select and choose your imported Pantone library. The Free Open-Source Workaround: FoneTone
Beyond the official .acb and .acb methods, a wealth of third-party resources have emerged offering Pantone color palettes and libraries in alternative file formats compatible with Adobe Illustrator. These are excellent options for designers who want ready-to-use swatch panels or are looking for specific color series not easily found elsewhere.
First, ensure Illustrator is up to date. Reinstall the extension via the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app. Sometimes proxy settings or firewalls block the connection; ensure Pantone is allowed through these systems.
In the past, Pantone offered a free utility to install the PANTONE PLUS Digital Libraries. This installer may no longer be directly available from the PANTONE website; however, the .acb files can still be found through community channels.
Since Adobe and Pantone ended their licensing agreement, the old “free” Pantone libraries have vanished from automatic updates. Now, searching for a reliable is the number one task for frustrated designers worldwide.
Create a Pantone account to search, pick, and save colors to your Adobe swatch panel.
