When a game launches, it checks with the Steam client to see if you own it. Forum coders created modified steam_api.dll (and steam_api64.dll ) files. These files spoof this check, telling the game that it is legally owned without needing the actual Steam client running.
The hosting demands for a site handling this much traffic and data are immense. The forum requires a dedicated high-performance server, and the staff estimated the annual costs to be around 1,200 euros. Faced with the prospect of closure, the forum turned to its users. "This means that come June, we have to rely on donations from you, the community," they pleaded. The community responded, and the site survived, transitioning to a donation-based model to keep the lights on. cs.rin.ru forums
