Frischluft Lenscare is a two-part plugin bundle consisting of and FL Depth of Field . While Out of Focus applies a uniform blur across a whole layer based on a chosen aperture shape, FL Depth of Field uses a Z-depth map (a grayscale image representing distance from the camera) to generate realistic, variable focal blurs across a 2D or 3D scene.

In the effect controls, set the "Depth Layer" to your grayscale map.

Simulating depth of field inside a 3D software (like Cinema 4D, Blender, or Maya) adds massive overhead to your render times. If a client requests a minor focal change, you have to re-render the entire 3D sequence. By exporting a clean, sharp 3D render alongside a lightweight Z-depth pass, you can apply FL Depth of Field in After Effects.
