Perhaps no single subculture exemplifies the fusion of trans identity and LGBTQ culture more than ballroom. Emerging in Harlem in the 1960s, ballroom provided a haven for Black and Latinx trans women and gay men to compete in "houses" (families of choice) through dance, fashion, and attitude. This culture directly birthed the "voguing" dance style, which Madonna famously appropriated in 1990, and continues to influence drag and pop music today.

Yet, in the decades that followed, as the movement sought legitimacy and mainstream acceptance, a painful schism emerged. Many gay and lesbian advocacy groups, eager to present a "palatable" face to heterosexual society, sidelined their transgender siblings.
