In recent years, researchers have discovered critical vulnerabilities in the archiving software, which is commonly used to open .rar files. A zero-day vulnerability tracked as CVE-2025-8088 (CVSS severity score of 8.8) was reported to be actively exploited in attacks using poisoned RAR archives. This flaw stems from a path traversal bug that enables arbitrary code execution through malicious archive files. Attackers use specially crafted archive paths to override the intended extraction directory, potentially letting them write files to sensitive locations on the system, such as the Windows Startup directory, ensuring the malware runs automatically each time the computer is turned on.
